The African Union at 50: National Sovereignty Still Prevails

The African Union has been celebrating its 50th anniversary at a summit May 25-27. The pan-African organization was founded with the goal of bringing unity and cooperation to the continent. It consults on issues of African security, cooperation and development, but due to struggles associated with Africa’s artificial nation-state boundaries, African governments will not cede tools of sovereignty to the supranational institution, rendering it powerless.
